When feelings are bigger than words

An eight-week art therapy group for children aged 6–12 — with an individual intake session, a closed group of six, and weekly written notes home. Led by Reena Clare, a master’s-qualified art psychotherapist, in Solaris Mont Kiara.

Why art therapy

Children don’t always have the words

When something is hard, adults talk. Children mostly can’t — not because they don’t feel it, but because the feeling arrives long before the vocabulary does. Asked directly, they say “I don’t know,” and they usually mean it.

Art therapy works around that. The act of making — drawing, painting, working with clay — gives a feeling somewhere to go before it has to become a sentence. A child who cannot explain that they feel small at school can make something small, in a corner of the page, in grey. And once it’s on the page, it can be looked at, named, and talked about — together, at their pace.

This is not an art class, and it isn’t about producing something good. No child is ever required to talk, to share, or to finish.

Is this a fit?

This may be a good fit if your child…

Finds it hard to name or manage big feelings.

Is anxious, withdrawn, or quick to become overwhelmed.

Is navigating a change at home — a move, a new school, a loss, a family change.

Is struggling with friendships, or holds it together at school and falls apart at home.

Would open up more easily through making than through talking.

No diagnosis or referral is needed. The programme is designed for children who need more than a school form tutor can offer and less than one-to-one clinical treatment. If a one-to-one setting would serve your child better, we’ll tell you that at the intake conversation — and point you to where.

The eight-week journey

One bloom, week by week

An individual intake session, then eight weekly group sessions — each building on the last.

First, an individual intake

Settling in — meeting, and building a first sense of safety. One-to-one, before the group begins.

Safe space

Trust, belonging, and what each child already brings.

Big feelings

Finding words and colours for emotions.

Calm in the storm

Noticing what the body is telling us.

Connection

Friendship, empathy, making something together.

My people

Trust, closeness and healthy boundaries.

Change

Resilience, and coping when things shift.

Hope

Looking forward, and one small step towards it.

Celebrating growth

A gallery, a goodbye, and caregivers invited in.

The order matters. Safety comes before feelings; feelings before the body; regulation before the harder relational work. Materials follow the same sequence — contained, predictable ones early, and freer ones like clay and paint only once the group trusts each other. It’s the same reason the group is closed: the same six children, every week, so trust has somewhere to build.

How it works

Gentle by design

It starts one-to-one

Every child has an individual intake session before the group begins, with a separate conversation for you. It’s where we hear your concerns, set goals together, and let your child meet the room and the materials with no group to manage. Nobody arrives on day one as a stranger.

A small group that doesn’t change

Six children, one therapist, the same room every week. The group closes once it starts — no one joins partway through. Every child experiences the whole arc, beginning to end, including the ending itself.

You hear from us every week

A short written note after every session: what the group worked on, and one specific thing to try at home. Plus a scheduled 15-minute call with Reena at the halfway point, with a written progress summary. The notes come to you in writing, so it doesn’t matter who does the school run.

It ends with something in your hands

After the final session you receive a written Closure Summary — your child’s progress, the strengths we saw, and a clear recommendation for what would serve them next. Reena tracks each child’s work through the block using an established art-therapy observational framework, and that record is what the summary is built on.

Your therapist

Led by Reena Clare

Reena holds an MA in Art Psychotherapy from the University of Hertfordshire and is certified in CATT (Children’s Accelerated Trauma Treatment). She has worked with children through the NHS and Kids Company in the UK.

She developed this programme and she runs it herself — every session, every block. That matters most in the moments no plan covers: when a child freezes at the edge of an activity, when two children clash, when something small turns out to be something big. Reading those moments accurately is what clinical training is for.

Give your child room to bloom

There’s no harm in starting with a conversation. We’ll talk through what you’re noticing, answer your questions, and help you find clarity — with no pressure, and no diagnosis needed.

There are 6 places in this group, and every child completes an individual intake session before the group begins — so enrolment closes on Friday 2 October to leave time for those sessions.

Questions parents ask

Before you enquire

How is this different from an art class?

An art class teaches technique and is judged on what gets made. This is a therapeutic programme: the making is the method, not the goal. It’s led by a master’s-qualified art psychotherapist, every child is individually assessed before joining, the group is closed and sequenced week by week, and you receive written progress reporting throughout and a written summary at the end. Nothing your child makes is marked, corrected, or compared.

Does my child need a diagnosis, or a referral?

No. Many children in the group have neither. The intake conversation is where we work out together whether this is the right fit — and if it isn’t, we’ll say so and help you find what is.

My child says they’re “bad at art.”

That’s genuinely not a barrier — quite often it’s a reason to come. There’s no drawing skill required and nothing is assessed. Children choose their own materials throughout, and most of what happens is about the process rather than the picture.

What if we miss a week?

The programme runs eight sessions across nine weeks, with a built-in catch-up week. One missed session is absorbed without shortening anyone’s programme. Because the group is closed and works as a unit, we do ask that children can commit to most of the eight weeks.

Can I stay and watch?

Not during sessions — the group’s privacy is part of what makes children willing to open up. You’ll hear from us in writing every week, you have a scheduled call at the halfway point, and you’re warmly invited into the final part of Session 8 for the exhibition.

What happens after eight weeks?

At the end, Reena recommends one of three next steps for your child: a second block for deeper work with a group that already knows each other, a move across to individual art therapy, or completing here. It’s a recommendation and a conversation, not an upsell — some children are finished at eight weeks, and we’ll say so.

Why weekly? Could it run in the school holidays instead?

Art therapy works through repetition and trust built over time — the research is clear that spacing sessions out does more than compressing them. And the programme’s own design depends on it: the materials and themes are sequenced so that harder, freer work only arrives once the group feels safe. That can’t happen in a weekend.

Is what my child shares kept private?

Yes. Session content is confidential, and it’s explained to your child in their own language at the intake session. You’ll receive the structured reporting described above — the weekly notes, the mid-programme summary, and the Closure Summary. Anything that raises a concern for your child’s safety, we would always talk to you about directly.
